Apraxia is the cruelest speech gap: the words are fully formed in your child’s head — the motor plan to say them misfires. Children with CAS know exactly what they want to say, which makes failed attempts uniquely frustrating. AAC gives the message a guaranteed exit while intensive speech therapy retrains the motor system.
CAS is treated with high-repetition motor practice (approaches like DTTC or ReST), and it’s slow, effortful work. AAC takes the daily communication load off that developing system: your child doesn’t have to spend their hardest skill on "I want the blue cup". Every AAC message also plays a perfect, identical spoken model — extra input, for free, hundreds of times a day.
Parents of children with CAS hear the "AAC will make them stop trying" worry more than anyone, because their child can sometimes produce words. The research answer is consistent: AAC does not suppress speech. In apraxia specifically, reducing pressure often means more spontaneous attempts, because attempts stop costing failure.
