Tala was built by a father for his non-speaking autistic son. That origin shapes every decision we make. This page says out loud what we believe — so you can decide if we're the right fit for your family, your classroom, or your practice.
Not speaking is not the same as not understanding, and it is not the same as having nothing to say. Every non-speaking or minimally speaking child is treated — by our app and by our words — as someone who understands more than they can currently show. Communication tools should assume ability, not test for it.
No child should have to prove they're "ready" for AAC. There is no minimum age, no required eye contact, no skills checklist. The research is settled: AAC does not delay speech — it supports it. Waiting is the only mistake.
Scripts, echolalia, gestures, taking your hand and leading you to the fridge — it's all communication. Tala is built around whole-phrase cards because that's how many autistic children, especially gestalt language processors, actually acquire language. We work with how children communicate, not against it.
Language matters. We say non-speaking or minimally speaking rather than "nonverbal", because many children who don't speak have rich verbal understanding — and many will type, sign, or speak later. We listen to autistic adults and AAC users about the words that describe them, and we update ours when they tell us we got it wrong.
Robotic text-to-speech tells a child their voice is an afterthought. Tala uses one natural, high-quality voice per language — in all 14 languages — because a child's first "I love you" through AAC should sound human.
Dedicated AAC devices cost thousands. Leading apps cost $250+. Tala is free to start, free forever for speech-language pathologists and teachers, and works in 14 languages — because a child's right to communicate shouldn't depend on their parents' budget or the language spoken at home.
We're parents and builders, not the final authority on autistic communication. Autistic adults, AAC users, SLPs, and families shape this app. If we're getting something wrong, tell us: hello@talaaac.com.
